While the Model Master paint finished smooth and nice with the lightest of coats, getting full coverage over the entire body was nigh impossible. I tried again with paint I’m more comfortable with and I got even better coverage but more orange peel. This new color is Gloss Ivory.

This is the paint I used this time around. Much easier for me to use than the model paint. I reckon this should be even more durable too.

Once this fully cures in a day or two, I should be able to either wetsand or polish this to a smoother shine, apply a light coat of gloss clear over this, or maybe just leave it alone. I wonder how orange peel i s dealt with on model and diecast cars?

I feel your pain. It took me a looonnnggg time to get any decent results with spray cans. Appare ntly, I have a heavy hand, or finger, on the nozzles.
I  found that I preferred the “regular” rustoleum over the 2x, it’s just too thick for my abilities, or lack thereof.

The problem I had with the model paint is that I too have a heavy finger on the nozzle and the spray pattern just wasn’t what I was use to. I’ve used rustoleum for car parts and such and have a better “understanding” how how to use it so  figured why not.

I’m gonna try regular or professional on the next car to see how it does. I’m gonna do a white DB5 for a good friend of mine for Christmas. Ideally, I wanted to do a Rapide or DB11, but apparently no one’s made a 1:64 model of those yet.

I too was becoming disgruntled with orange peel on some of my paintjobs. This summer I did a little experimenting with baking finishes and ended up with amazing results. I still need to take notes for how long/what temp to run at with some paints. But when it worked, it worked well. Since toaster ovens are dime a dozen at yard sales I just picked on up for $5 and keep it in the garage for baking cars only.

If you want to give model paints another go, try Tamiya sprays. They’re almost insultingly easy to lay down a smooth coat with. Plus it’s thinner than Rustoleum so you preserve more detail on the body, though HW wasn’t exactly subtle with panel lines back then so the Rustoleum looks fine for that.

Practice and patience, both of which I’m still learning.

I think you should invest in a cheap airbrush setup and use proper auto paint or slightly reduced testors . Hell, even using reduced nail polish would produce nice smooth results. Spray bombs just can’t produce thin smooth coverage. Too thick , not enough pressure. Hobby shops may carry airbrush specific paints.

I was trying to avoid that, but when more disposable money comes around I may consider it. Until that day, I will fight this fight. Watching baremetalHW, I know airbrushing is better overall.

I like the color a lot!

I exclusively use spray paints and usually get pretty decent results. I’m sure not airbrush-like, but it works for me. I prefer the rustoleum gloss enamel paints, they’ve never done me wrong and come in plenty of colors.

there’s hobby kits for $50 out there that spray at 15 psi (which I would think acceptable) and around $100 for larger compressor kits that even include in line dryers . I used to have one of those compressors my bro ther left behind but it got lost in a move...woulda gave it to you.
